"I have some bad news..."

Those are NOT the words you want to hear from your husband when he calls you at work on a simple Tuesday afternoon. I instantly knew something was wrong as I could hear both of my kiddos SCREAMING in the background. I asked him what was going on and he very calmly says "Noah knocked out his front tooth!" I couldn't believe it. I wanted to know when, where, how!

So here is how it goes... Noah and Emma were playing with the neighbor kids across the street while Ryan was working in our front yard. Their "Grandma" (foster mom) asked if they could go in the backyard to play on the play structure and Ryan agreed. They were having a great time and as Ryan was headed across the street to get them both for lunch he heard Noah screaming. Out came "grandma" with Noah in her arms. He was climbing up the ladder to go down the slide when he tripped and fell forward.

They both originally thought he had just cut his mouth open but after further investigation, they realized that his tooth was missing. Ryan called me immediately and I called the kids' dentist. She is a fabulous pediatric dentist and also one of my student's mom. They got us in as soon as possible. I left work and headed home to pick up Noah.

Once I got home, I found him calm and collected with some blood on his shirt. Emma was still upset though. I think she was worried about Noah. We quickly loaded the kids up and headed to the dentist. While we drove there both kids ate their lunch (since they didn't get a chance to earlier).

We arrived and they took x-rays of his mouth to make sure none of the other teeth were damaged. (Luckily none were.) We then headed to a room for an examination. Noah is tough cookie! The tooth was knocked completely out and they did not have to go in to retrieve any fragments. They suggested soft foods for a few days and some Motrin or Tylenol as needed. The only bad news is since it's a baby tooth that was knocked out, they do nothing to replace it. So my poor little baby boy will be missing his top tooth for the next 5 years or so!

I am very grateful that nothing worse happened that day and that it was just his tooth. No stitches or broken arms. But I can only imagine what I have to look forward to as he grows up!

Getting X-rays!
Watching a movie while waiting for the dentist.
All done!

Oh my! I had a friend whose son had the same thing happen (though he was about four) ... I love your positive attitude and think of the fun story it'll be for years to come. :) Glad he's alright.
